Julius Nyerere International Airport

Julius Nyerere International Airport also known as JNIA is the largest and the busiest International Airport in Tanzania.

This is one among the 58 airports and airstrips within the country which are managed and operated by Tanzania Airport Authority (TAA).

TAA is a semi-autonomous government agency that operates, manages, and develops all government owned airports in Tanzania mainland.

This Airport was previously known as Dar es Salaam International Airport (DIA). It was renamed in 2006 in honor of the first President and the Founder of the Nation of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.

The Airport is located southwest, 12km from the Dar es Salaam city center and is strategically located for easy accessibility by road, rail and sea.

Julius Nyerere International Airport Terminals And Capacity

On average it handles 2.8 million passengers a year, This includes Passengers departure and arrive in all three terminals that is terminal 1, 2 and 3.

Terminal one for general aviation and terminal two for scheduled domestic and international flights and terminal three for scheduled international flights.

The government (has constructed Terminal three (TBIII) is whichis the largest terminal at JNIA with a capacity of handling up to 6,000,000 passengers annually. In addition the JNIA has a freight terminal for all cargo operations.

The terminal buildings are supported by two cross runways; 05/23 which is 46 meters wide and 3,000 meters long and; 14/32 which is 30 meters wide and 1,000 meters long.

Julius Nyerere International Airport is currently served by more than 20 scheduled international airlines linking Dar es Salaam with the rest of the world.

It is also connected to all major tourist attractions in Tanzania by more than 50 charter aircraft. Making the airport the connecting point for leisure travelers be it hunting expeditions or wildlife safari.

Departures Passenger Guide

Please come to the Domestic and International Flight Check-In Counter and check in early.

Present your air ticket and passport or National ID and leave your luggage at the counter except for your carry-on luggage. Please receive your boarding pass and baggage receipt from airline staff.

Julius Nyerere International Airport Customs Inspection
Passengers who carry with them a large amount of currency out of United Republic of Tanzania may be required to follow customs declaration procedures. Please visit the www.tra.go.tz website for more details.

At the passport control booth, please present your passport and boarding pass to the Immigration Officer.

Please you may take off passport covers in order to maintain smooth inspection. For some countries your passport will need to be valid for at least six months and you may also need a valid Visa.

You should always check your destination country’s entry requirements before your travel; you are advised to apply for a visa at the relevant embassy before travelling.

Julius Nyerere International Airport Security Check
They conduct carry-on luggage / security inspections at the security check point. Please present your boarding pass to the security personnel, and place your carry-on luggage through the X-ray scanner.

Passengers themselves go through a metal detection gate for security inspection.

Please get on board following the guidance of airline staff.

Passengers can board the aircraft through special buses and access the aircraft with accommodation ladders. This is for the aircrafts parked at remote parking.
